OUR YOUNG WARRIORS

Love belongs between people that lay their life on the line; whatever way they do it.

"I was reminded of this tonight at dinner.  It's sad but very true:
WAR DOES NOT DETERMINE WHO'S RIGHT---ONLY WHO'S LEFT!!

And I can contest to this."

 Viet Nam Navy Veteran

Our Angelo is away from home and serving this beautiful country.

As you say a prayer for your own; include our boy and his mates and superiors.

We too, remember yours.

As we gathered for Thanksgiving, we watched a video of Angelo and his Mates graduating from Boot Camp.  We saw the events unfold as Families, Friends and our Sailor went out for their first day off the base.  Later we also spoke to Angelo on the phone.  As I watched, as I heard his deep baritone voice, I realized the fullness of my heart...the pride and gladness that richly pervades my being for the dignity I see him bring to himself, his uniform, our Family and this United States.  He and his Mates grace all of us.

What a tremendous commitment and courage it takes to devote one's life to Service.

God/dess keep them safe, and create personal evolution for each of them.

This walking warrior is going the way of the Peace Pilgrim; putting all his energy and intention in simply walking his talk...across America and back; never forgetting ~ always reminding everyone he meets that we need to cultivate Peace in every heart on this planet so no person need raise a weapon, fist or foot  in their defense ever again.

remind you of somebody?

She walked back and forth over the USA 10 times, speaking to people about Peace, sleeping in the elements and eating only if someone offered her food.

"There is no glimpse of the light without walking the path. You can't get it from anyone else, nor can you give it to anyone. Just take whatever steps seem easiest for you, and as you take a few steps it will be easier for you to take a few more."....Peace Pilgrim

We gather and honor the young man who leaves home,

and stand in Blessing of him, his mates,

all service people, the USA, and the Glorious Lady Earth.

I received a mailing that people are wearing red on Fridays to assert and advertise their support of our Troops.  That's a great Tribal Way to communicate and rally ourselves.  I need to add some white also, for a reminder that although I support our precious warriors, I petition for Peace in all Hearts.

One of the greatest tribes on the planet!!

It's lonely without our Boys and Girls at home.

Peace is more than absence of war.

Here's some ole salty stuff for ya:

YARNS FROM THE FABRIC OF LIFE AT SEA

"Only rich men and sailors have

done like I've done and gone

where I've gone." Capt. McKinley,

ANGELO'S PATERNAL GRANDFATHER SERVED IN THE NAVY

ANGELO'S GREAT GREAT AUNT SOPHIE SERVED IN WWII

In those days a lady in the Navy was called a WAC

ANGELO'S GREAT GREAT UNCLE STANLEY SERVED IN WWII

After Uncle Stan passed, Aunt Ann found this in his little notebook:

"The moving finger writes, and having writ,

Moves on; nor all thy piety nor wit,

Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,

Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it."

~Omar Khayam~

Like so many of his generation...he never let on that he was that deep!

On another page:

"ON THE DEATH OF A HOBO PAL

No friends to mark this hobo's grave,

When he went to his rest;

But Mother Nature covered him,

And took him to her breast;

The morn dawns forth both fair and clear,

And the sun is in the sky,

But naught is seen of the hobo,

Who passed away on high.

But who are we that we should judge,

Or try to mark his fate?

Instead of showing mercy,

We're full of loathsome hate.

What if he was a hobo,

And his face was marked with sin,

We know that He who guides this world

Will always care for him."

In those days, many a sailor rode the 'rail' ...

and Uncle Stan worked the "Carnie," after the war.

ANGELO'S GREAT GREAT UNCLE CLYDE SHOVED OFF ON THE NAUTILUS,

THE FIRST NUCLEAR SUBMARINE.

This guy sure does look like Uncle Clyde

HISTORY OF USS NAUTILUS

Grandfather Nick is ROTC Frank's Grandfather

He served served in the Navy right after the Korean War

This famous picture encapsulates much of the feelings of mixed joy and sorrow...the relief of war being over, and the gift of coming home...seeking comfort and release of horrors witnessed and purported; the near misses for a sailor's safety while serving as protectors for a nation.

Times have changed, and though I am still working at realizing it, the Navy no longer means a Sailor is on a boat!  Though he did travel by boat, Angelo's duties were as mechanic for a specific Navy airplane.

angelo had mechanical skills when he enlisted, and he came home with a wider range of knowledge and ability.  He did well and was well-decorated.

His tours in Japan and El Salvador enriched his sense of worldwide humanity and the gifts unique to other cultures.

Our Sailor served his time and returned safely to us...we are intensely grateful.  As life would have it, he was home just in time to see his Great Grandfather again while he lived, and then be with us for his Funeral.  Angelo and his cousin Frank honored Peter well when they attended in Full Dress.  Dad was smilin', I know it!

Angelo's enlistment into the service was an opening for his Great Grandfather to be able to speak to him about his own war experiences, and start dad's healing from the hardships and horrors Peter saw and endured.  That is a gift not every veteran of the wars prior to Viet Nam received; mostly, as Dad told me himself...the guys didn't talk about it...society didn't talk about it, and families didn't either.

there's always more to come; more scans, more information
